Sports Fan Traditions was started in Charleston, South Carolina and centers around the sculptures of Marty Murray. Marty is a local sculptor as well as a serious sports fan. Born and raised in the Charleston Lowcountry, his art work often reflects his love for this area. He has been commissioned by the Historic Charleston Foundation and Middleton Place, A National Historic Landmark to sculpt specific historical sites and statues. Most recently he has become known for his College Ring Plaque reproductions. These pieces are exact replicas of the ring face/bezel of many American universities and colleges, recreated in an enlarged scale to be displayed as a wall plaque or standing free on a desk or shelf. These patent pending sculptures are carefully researched for accuracy and then meticulously recreated one at a time, capturing every detail and nuance.
Marty is a graduate of The Citadel. He was a four year track letterman and captain of the team as a senior. After graduation he married Dale Hogan and entered the United States Army. He attained the rank of Captain and received an honorable discharge, returning to Charleston in 1974. Marty has been married for thirty-eight years; he has two children, and three grandchildren. His daughter is a Clemson graduate and avid ‘Tiger’ fan. His son is a graduate of The Citadel and, like his Dad, loves his ‘Dogs’. Marty began sculpting full time when he was forty years old. He sculpts the things in life which mean something to him. “I want people to recognize what I sculpt, and not have to analyze what I sculpt”.
Marty spends most of his time in his shop working, but still attends all Citadel sporting events, and follows all college sports with a passion. His constant companion and advisor is Oliver, a registered English bulldog.
